Supporting Girls in Soccer Through herLENS.
PA West Soccer Association believes every female athlete deserves the opportunity to grow, compete, and succeed in an environment that recognizes and supports her unique needs.
Developing female soccer players involves more than technical skills, tactical knowledge, and physical performance. It requires an understanding of the physical, emotional, and developmental changes that influence a young athlete’s experience throughout her soccer journey.
Coaches, parents, and clubs play an important role in shaping that experience. By increasing awareness, improving education, and creating supportive environments, we can help girls build confidence, strengthen their love for the game, and reach their individual potential.
Understanding the Female Athlete
PA West Soccer encourages our soccer community to become more knowledgeable about five important areas that contribute to the health, development, and overall experience of female athletes.

1. Environment & Wellbeing
Creating positive, inclusive, and supportive soccer environments where girls feel comfortable, respected, encouraged, and confident in their abilities.
2. Growth, Puberty & Development
Recognizing the physical and emotional changes that occur during adolescence and understanding how these changes may influence training, performance, confidence, and participation.
3. Menstrual Cycle Awareness
Building awareness and understanding of the menstrual cycle while encouraging open, respectful conversations that allow coaches and athletes to better understand individual needs.
4. Nutrition, Fueling & Recovery
Promoting healthy habits surrounding nutrition, hydration, rest, and recovery to support the demands of growth, development, training, and competition.
5. Injury Prevention & Physical Health
Increasing awareness of female athlete-specific injury considerations and the importance of appropriate strength training, movement preparation, conditioning, and injury risk reduction.
Education Makes a Difference
Through U.S. Soccer’s herLENS initiative, coaches, parents, and soccer organizations have access to educational resources designed to improve their understanding of female athlete development.
PA West Soccer encourages our member clubs, coaches, families, and players to explore these resources and incorporate this knowledge into their everyday soccer environments.
By becoming more informed, we can make better decisions, provide stronger support, and create more meaningful opportunities for girls to participate and succeed.
Our Commitment to Her Future
At PA West Soccer, we want every girl to have the opportunity to develop not only as a soccer player, but also as a confident, healthy, and empowered individual.
Together, we can create a soccer culture that understands her needs, supports her development, celebrates her achievements, and encourages her to stay involved in the game at every level.
Because developing the female athlete means investing in the future of our game.
