July 20, 2023 - PA West's Dr. Terry Eguaoje and Pitt's Randy Waldrum on the sidelines for the Nigerian Women's National Team at the World Cup! Nigeria drew 0-0 against Canada in their first match and followed up their second match with a 3-2 victory over the host country Australia.

July 27, 2023 - Nigeria sit on top of Group B after this morning's win over host country Australia. Canada are tied with four points after their victory over Ireland. Nigeria will face Ireland in their third and final group match game, and Canada will look to eliminate Australia from the tournament.

With the Netherlands netting seven goals against Vietnam, the USWNT finished second in the group and wait to see which opponent they will face in the knockout stages of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. August 2, 2023 - Ater 20 years with the Brazilian Women's National Team,  Marta's World Cup Career comes to an end after drawing 0-0 against Jamaica in Brazil's last group play match at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Marta is considered one of the all-time greats of the sport and concludes her career with an incredible 91 goals in 92 caps for Brazil, as well as becoming the first player, male or female, to score at five FIFA World Cup tournaments during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also became the first player to score in five consecutive Olympic Games in 2021 and claimed the Female Player Of The Year for five straight years from 2006-2010. She remains the all-time World Cup goal scorer out of both men and women.

August 3, 2023 - The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Knockout Rounds are set! The United States will face Sweden Sunday morning at 5:00 AM. Pitt Women's Soccer Head Coach Randy Waldrum and the Nigeria Women's National Team will take on the 2022 European Champions, England, Monday at 3:30 AM EST, who's looking to add the World Cup trophy to their trophy case. 

The winner of the United States vs. Sweden will meet the winner of Japan vs. Norway in the 2023 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals. The winner of Nigeria vs. England will meet the winner of the Jamaica vs. Colombia.

August 3, 2023 - Morocco defeated Colombia in their last group stage match to solidify their place in the 2023 FIFA World Cup Knockout Stages for the first time. In the same group, Germany bowed out of the tournament after drawing 1-1 with Korea to slide to third place in their group. This is the first time the Germany Women's National Team has not made it to the Knockout stages for the first time in their history.

August 6, 2023 - The former World Cup champions reign has officially come to an end. The United States Women's National Team fell short of reaching the 2023 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals in a hard-fought match up against a familiar foe in Sweden.

August 7, 2023 - The Nigeria Super Falcons bowed out of the 2023 FIFA World Cup after a gritty and hard-fought tournament. The Super Falcons went 1-2-0 in group play to finish second and claim a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup. Nigeria would match up and face 2022 European Champions England in what would be a physical battle that showcased a straight red card to England star player Lauren James, as well as outstand goalkeeping from both Nigeria and England in between the sticks.

August 10, 2023 - The final eight teams have solidified their spots in the FIFA Womens World Cup Quarterfinals. Of the eight teams remaining, five teams including Sweden, Japan, England, Netherlands and France remain unbeaten in the tournament. Sweden will face off against Japan in the quarterfinals and the winner will face the winner of Spain vs. Netherlands.

August 10, 2023 - England star player Lauren James will miss the next two matches of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after a straight red card in the Round of 16 match against Nigeria. James was seen stepping on the back of a Nigerian player and was handed down a two-match ban on top of the straight red. James will not be able to return unless the Lioness' make it through to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Final.

August 11, 2023 - Quarterfinals action is underway! Sweden are through to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Semifinals after defeating Japan 2-1 in the quarterfinals! This is the first time in Sweden's history that they have reached consecutive semifinals. 

Spain are through to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Semifinals after upsetting a strong Netherlands team 2-1 in extra time! 19-year-old Spanish Winger Salma Paralleulo scored the winner for Spain off the bench in the 111th minute to send them through to the semifinals for the first time.

With the first two quarterfinals match ups completed, we wait for hosts Australia to face off against France, along with England against Colombia. Colombia look to win their second knockout stage game against an England squad that will be without star player Lauren James due to red card suspension for two matches.

August 12, 2023 - The hosts have pulled off a major victory! Australia has upset a red-hot France team that has dominated the Women's World Cup up until this far. The match ended scoreless after 90 minutes and went to extra time, where both France and Australia could not find a match winning goal. Both teams would make at least 6 penalties in the shootout.  

The first penalty taken by France was saved, giving Australia an advantage by making their first. France would make their second attempt and save Australia's second attempt to make the match level.  France would miss their fourth attempt as it would smash off of the side of the post to give Australia a chance to clinch semifinal spot against England. Australia's keeper would step up and smash the ball off of the side of the post, keeping the match square at 3-3. 

France and Australia would both make their fourth, fifth, and sixth penalties. Australia would save Frances's penalty, and France would return the favor to go to the tenth round of penalties. France would miss off of the post and Australia would bury the ball in the back of the net to win an absolute thriller over France.

August 12, 2023 - Without star player Lauren James in the lineup for the Lionesses, England would show enough quality and earned a scrappy 2-1 victory over underdogs Colombia in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Quarterfinals. With England advancing to the semifinals, they will face off against hosts' Australia on August 16.

August 15, 2023 - Spain squared off against Sweden and claimed a 2-1 dramatic victory to advance to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Final. The match was scoreless through 80 minutes. Spain would make substitutions that would be the difference between winning and bowing out of the tournament. With less than ten minutes until stoppage time, Spain would score the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute. Sweden would equalize shortly after, but Spain would score the match winner in the 89th minute to solidify their spot in the final. Spain is officially the youngest team to ever make a Women's World Cup Final with the average age of the team at 25.3 years of age. Spain will face off against the winner of England and host country Australia.

August 17, 2023 - England are through to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Final after defeating hosts' Australia 3-1 on Wednesday. 

England looked phenomenal when attacking in the final third. Ella Toone would net a beautiful first goal in the 36th minute. Toone dribbled across the 18-yard box diagonally with and would finish the shot with the outside of her boot across goal. 

Australia would equalize in the 63rd minute with Captain Sam Kerr displaying a world class finish from well outside the 18-yard box to level the match at 1-1. 

England would put pressure on the Australia back line and would force a costly mistake by trying to clear the ball and completely whiffing, leaving England's Lauren Hemp with an easy finish around the keeper to give the Lionesses the advantage in the 71st minute. 

The Lionesses would slam the door shut after Alessia Russo's 86th minute goal to cement England in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Final against Spain on Sunday, August 20.

August 17, 2023 - Australia will square off against Sweden in the third and fourth place match on Saturday in Aukland. Both teams head into the match coming off of heartbreaking losses that forced these two teams to battle for bronze at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
