PA West's "Street Soccer &
Skill Days" offer any registered U9/U10 PA West player the opportunity
to experience "sandlot" soccer. The "Street Soccer & Skill Days" program
is offered in three locations around Pittsburgh: North, East and South.
On most Saturdays in the spring (April to June) for 2 hours between 4 &
6 pm, players come to learn and play soccer in a "pick-up" gme environment.
Each week at each "Street
Soccer & Skill Days" site, the first hour is spent teaching individual
soccer techniques to the participating players. Children then participate
in match-related or 1v1 activities to help perfect their techniques against
opposition in more demanding situations. The second hour is spent playing
"street soccer". Children are randomly assigned to teams and then play
for 5 to 10 minutes. There is no adult coaching, adult feedback or adult
refereeing. Rather, the children play in games supervised by PA West staff
where they motivate themselves, figure out how to use the learnt techniques
and play in a "fear-free" environment. After playing their first game,
the children are randomly made into new teams and play again. The goal
is for children to get a feel for "street soccer" where they are in control
of the game, they largely supervise themselves and they can play free of
the fear of making mistakes in front of adults. |
