PA West State Coaching Program - Course Descriptions

Coaching certification within PA West Soccer is geared towards developing coaches that can enhance the soccer experience of our member players. A range of courses is offered that provide training for the new recreational coach as well as the more serious coach looking for up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge. Courses range from the State Youth "Y" Certificate up to the 36-hour State "D" License course. Qualified coaches looking for more advanced training should look for information in US Soccer's National Coaching School section. All PA West Soccer courses are designed to meet the needs of our coaches and clubs in today's changing soccer environment.
 
Introductory Coaching Certificate

Introductory Coaching Certificate Syllabus: The “Introductory Coaching Certificate” course is designed for the coach who may be coaching for the first time and may not have any playing background. The course focuses on activities that will identify the proper techniques necessary to play soccer at any level and give the participants ideas on how to successfully plan and conduct training sessions. While technically geared towards enhancing individual’s performance, training activities will be presented that will assist in the development of the team.

Objectives of the Introductory Coaching Certificate:

  • To prepare coaches for training players by expanding the player’s technical abilities through fun games and activities.
  • To provide the framework and understanding of practical coaching tools for the preparation of the players and the team. 
  • To introduce attacking and defending tactics in the 4v4 and 5v5 game.
  • To provide the framework and understanding for small sided games

Candidate Expectations:

  • To participate in all activities including field and lecture sessions (physical participation is not required but encouraged).
  • To bring a properly inflated ball, appropriate soccer footwear, shin guards, notepad, pen, water, and willingness to learn with an open mind.
  • The course is seven hours long…either all day at weekend or two evenings. Cost $30

State Youth ("Y") Certificate - Coaching U-6 to U-10 In-House/Recreational players

The mission of the State Youth License is to provide current and advanced information on the growth and development of the youth soccer player. The course takes the approach that the "game within each child" is at the center of all decisions and actions taken by the child, coach and club organization. The six-hour course format provides coaches with a basic knowledge of methodology, team administration, risk reduction, child characteristics and a wide variety of age-appropriate activities. Activities will be fun, developmentally appropriate, growth enhancing and have implications for the game. The Youth Module can be offered in a split format in special circumstances (either two nights or one full day on the weekend)

U6-U8 Module

  • Philosophy of Coaching and Characteristics of U6/U8 Children (Classroom)
  • Field Session with coaches (Gymnasium or Outdoors)
  • Discussion on P & C, Team/Risk Mgt., Modified Laws - (Classroom)
  • Field Session with U6 Players: U6 Activities, 3 v 3 game on appropriate field (Gymnasium or Outdoors)
  • Field Session with U8 Players: U8 Activities, 4 v 4 game on appropriate field (Gymnasium or Outdoors)

Course length: 6 hours

U10/U12 Module

  • Philosophy of Coaching and Characteristics of U10/U12 Children (Classroom)
  • Field Session with coaches (Gymnasium or Outdoors)
  • Discussion on P & C, Team/Risk Mgt., Modified Laws (Classroom)
  • Field Session with U10 Players: U10 Activities, game on appropriate field, explanation of training session (Gymnasium or Outdoors)
  • Field Session with U8 Players: U12 Activities, game on appropriate field, explanation of training session ( Gymnasium or Outdoors)

The E License

OBJECTIVES: The E License is focused on delivering content and instructional methods relevant to coaching 9‐12 year old soccer athletes. The course is intended to be the initial license serving as a stepping stone along the National Course pathway.

DEVELOPMENT TARGETS:

1. The Coach will demonstrate competency in teaching methods necessary to effectively instruct technique and the application to the game.
2. The Coach will demonstrate competency in organizing a complete, appropriate training session for a soccer team in the Basic Stage of 9‐12 years old.
3. The Coach will be familiar with the Principles of attacking and defending as applied to a small‐sided game. (3v3 to 6v6)

The course is made up of three components: 

  • Independent Study (Pre‐Course) online work prior to taking the course
  • Core Course; 17 hours of classroom and field work
  • Testing; Field session by the candidate

At the end of the course a coach will receive a pass or an incomplete. An incomplete will mean that the coach must redo some portion of the course which can be arranged with the Director of Coaching.

"D" License - Coaching Travel/Classic players 
("C" License Preparatory Course)

Please Note:  E certificate or equivalent required; no waivers granted

The "D" license is intended for coaches who desire to coach at more advanced age levels and/or aspire to continue on for a USSF National Coaching License. The continued improvement of player technique at speed and the teaching of fundamental tactics form the two pillars of the "D" license. The tactics section of the "D" license deals not only with individual and group tactics, but the foundations of team play and the principles of offense and defense. The course will help coaches create game situations in which players are required to solve problems as individuals, in small groups and as a team.

Course length:  36 hours
